Another technique is to use specialized tools, like ed and awk, which are designed for extracting and filtering lines of text. You generally use these programs together to perform tasks like filtering lines in a set of files and extracting and formatting information. Both UNIX commands and specialized tools provide you with primitives, but they do not give you the programmatic infrastructure to perform tasks that are more complex. Enter scripting languages. Scripting languages like Perl and Python enable you to perform many of the tasks you accomplished using UNIX commands and tools, but they give you plenty of infrastructure to extend and enhance your solutions. In addition, these languages let you write programs that perform a wide range of tasks, from talking to remote hosts over a network or providing a GUI for user interaction, to performing mathematical operations. There are many reasons to choose a scripting language over a compiled language for a project. Among them are the increased speed of development, the benefits of dynamic typing, and the high-level abstractions insulating you from low-level operations. The common cycle for developing programs in statically typed languages goes something like this: create and edit source files, build the code (compile and link), and run and debug the program. Over time, projects can grow to include many source files that may require recompilation for each new edit. Although there are techniques that reduce source dependency and thereby build times, the build phase can become very time consuming. Contrast this with development under scripting languages. Because these languages are interrupted, there is no build phase; development proceeds directly from edit to run. For mid-to-large projects, this process can greatly reduce the development cycle. In

general, compiled code does run faster than interrupted code, but for many applications, execution time is not a factor Scripting languages also provide convenient abstractions for common operations. The underlying principle for Social CRM s success is very different from its predecessor As I ve already established, traditional CRM is based on an internal operational approach to manage customer relationships effectively But Social CRM is based on the ability of a company to meet the personal agendas of their customers while at the same time meeting the objectives of their own business plan It s aimed at customer engagement rather than customer management In fact, my contention is that the CRM technologies we have been used to, such as sales, marketing, and support applications, even the on-demand versions of those, are not the technical capital of the 21st century s era of the social customer The customer is not just becoming the central repository for value, but wants to actively participate in value creation with business Therefore the consumer technologies and service offerings adopted as platforms for individually meaningful life choices are where CRM technology needs to be This doesn t mean I m saying goodbye to Siebel, Sage, Oracle, SAP, or any of the on-demand vendors However, their technologies will have to evolve and not just associate with some reorganized contemporary set of business processes They will have to integrate the features of newer technologies that facilitate market conversations, social networking, user communities, and the like in other words, that exist to transform and operate businesses not just as process-pushing producers but as aggregators for and partners in the customer value chain (more on that later) That will probably come later than sooner we may be a few years away from that But there are some things that are both happening now and need to happen now Even though the on-demand software as a service (SaaS) paradigm has become popular, we also now have to consider moving to an additional paradigm of platform as a service (PaaS) So that when you as a customer buy a laptop or a cellphone, whatever your specific purposes, you are choosing a piece that will fit into the platform you use for the services and associated goods you need to conduct your life which among other things, consists of business services, in that there are businesses associated with them The differences are deep, though all the differences are permeated with either the principles or practices of managing customers or involving them in the activities of the company in a mutually beneficial way Table 2-1 shows the differences as defined by a community of 300 CRM professionals on the wiki I mentioned above.

A wireless AP is basically a bridging device in that the clients generally have IP addresses that are on the same network as the wired side of the AP A wireless router is a device with a LAN connection on one network (IP subnet) and a wireless radio providing access to wireless clients on a different network (again, IP subnet) The wireless router routes data between the two networks Figure 4-11 shows a wireless router; you can see that, externally, the device looks just like an AP
